1.2009 UD Ultimate Base Jumbo Patches/Jerseys

Comments: Ultimate jumbos retain the top spot this week.  Sales of “vintage” players such as Dimaggio, Satchel Paige, Roberto Clemente and Ted Williams have been phenomenal.  This is the hottest product, as a whole that the hobby has seen in an awfully long time.

Contenders Basketball SP Tracker – 2/4/10 Update

February 4th, 2010

There are roughly 20% more Contenders auctions in the basketball category than when I started this tracker yesterday.

I will continue to update the numbers as often as I get the chance. Again, its early to try and guess SPs but the one notable thing I saw since yesterday was a Tyreke Evans redemption selling for $200, simply incredible

Player Listed Sold
Brandon Jennings 5 2
Tyreke Evans 3 1
James Harden 0 3
Blake Griffin 4 2
Jrue Holiday 5 1
Ty Lawson 4 2
Jonny Flynn 2 4
DeJuan Blair 4 7
Earl Clark 2 1
Stephen Curry 5 3

If you are interested in checking my totals, or finding out what of each player is listed, you can simply click through on the player’s name and see the total cards listed presently.

Although the results are very preliminary, it sure doesn’t seem that DeJuan Blair is an SP. It also intrigues me that the 3rd pick, James Harden, doesn’t have any autographs listed right now.

Collector Claims Panini Bounty

February 4th, 2010

Panini sent out a press release yesterday to inform those who have been frantically busting and searching through their Leaf Limited singles that the bounty for the Manning Brees #44 Insert has been pulled and Dawn McNew of Lehigh Acres, Florida is the winner! She turned an 11 dollar investment in to $1,500 and a box of every Panini product in 2010!

ARLINGTON, TX – FEB. 3, 2010 – In celebration of Super Bowl 44 in Miami, Panini, a leading manufacturer of licensed collectibles, NFL and NBA trading cards, put out a bounty valued at more than $1,500, for the collector who pulls the NFL Limited 2009 Pro Bowl Combo Materials card featuring Super Bowl quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Drew Brees (sequentially numbered #44 of 100). With a week left before the offer expired, collector Dawn McNew of Lehigh Acres, Fla., contacted the Panini offices to let them know the card all of America was searching for was part of her 1,000+ card Peyton Manning card collection.

“I am a huge, huge Peyton Manning fan and I only collect Peyton Manning cards, which is how I ended up with the card. I simply collect as many Peyton Manning cards as possible,” admitted McNew. “I saw the offer advertised on the Panini website and since I knew I had two versions of that card, I thought it would be worth checking my collection to see if I had #44. It was surely a great feeling to see one of my cards with the sequential numbering #44/100.”

In all, the physical education teacher at Lehigh Senior High School, estimates her Manning card collection to exceed 1,000 different cards, including two of the Manning-Brees Pro Bowl Material cards. An Indiana native, who moved to Florida seven years ago, she purchased the #44/100 Manning-Brees card for $11 on Nov. 12 on eBay where she does most of her collecting. She also shops at NASCAR Sports & Collectibles in Bonita Springs, Fla.

“When Dawn admitted that she was unsure if she wanted to part with the #44/100 version because it was part of her Manning collection, we knew she was a true collector and exemplified everything great about collecting,” admits Scott Prusha, Marketing Manager for Panini. “As a result, we decided to amend the bounty and return card #44/100 to her along with the year supply of Panini NFL cards and an exclusive Manning-Brees #1 of 1.”

The Manning-Brees card, a part of the Pro Bowl Combo Materials insert set in Panini’s 2009 Limited NFL brand, was released in October. It has a limited print run of just 100 sequentially numbered cards, and according to Beckett, is valued at $20. The offer, made by Panini on January 27, remained open to collectors until the opening kick-off of Super Bowl 44, on Sunday, February 7 @ 6:28 pm ET.

“From the hundreds of emails we received about this offer and the response on chat boards, blogs and websites, it is apparent that collectors had fun with this bounty,” said Prusha. “We’re so pleased that we will be able to reward a collector for their support of Panini NFL cards.”

The Panini Group, established almost 50 years ago in Modena, Italy, has subsidiaries throughout Europe, Latin America and the United States. Panini is the world leader in officially licensed collectables and is the leading multi-national publisher of comics, children’s magazines and Manga in Europe and Latin America. Panini has distribution channels in more than 100 countries and employs a staff of over 800. For more information visit us at www.paniniamerica.net or www.paninigroup.com.

2009 Playoff Contenders Basketball on eBay – SP Tracker

February 3rd, 2010

2009 Playoff Contenders cards have hit eBay! On-card autos, NBA jerseys and possible SPs to be announced later all add to the excitement of this product. Contenders has been a huge hit in football since 1998, it remains to be seen how the basketball card collectors will react to it.

One of the most exciting parts of this release is trying to guess what players will be SP’d. Often, after SP information is released, huge price spikes happen. So lets try tracking 10 notable rookie autos. I will update this list as time goes on and educated guesses will be made on who, signed how much, of what. I will track the player and the amount of each autograph listed and sold:

Player Listed Sold
Brandon Jennings 4 0
Tyreke Evans 2 0
James Harden 2
Blake Griffin 3
Jrue Holiday 2
Ty Lawson 2
Jonny Flynn 4
DeJuan Blair 5 1
Earl Clark 1
Stephen Curry 3 1

If you are interested in checking my totals, or finding out what of each player is listed, you can simply click through on the player’s name and see the total cards listed presently.

It is too early for prognostication upon what cards are short prints and which are not. The next few days should bring us a great deal more information as this product makes its way into the hands of more collectors.

A Pull for the Ages – Lebron/Kobe Exquisite Logoman

February 3rd, 2010

2008-09 Exquisite Lebron James – Kobe Bryant Dual Logoman 1/1 Auto

This card was pointed out to me this evening by a friend and its a beaut (more pictures in the link). Lets just say, if I ever pull a card like this, there will be a hole in my roof from where my head hit it when I jumped. Certainly a pull for the ages. With 3 days+ to go, the bidding has already reached $10,000. It likely won’t stop there.

So lets speculate for a moment, lets say this card ends at $15K. What other basketball cards could you buy with $15k? Here are 6 possible alternatives for you, if you had the patience to wait as they showed up.

1. 2 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 10s or 3.5 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan BGS 9.5s
2. 6 1957-58 Topps Bill Russell BVG 7 RCs
3. 7.5 cases of 2009-10 UD Exquisite Basketball
4. 15 2008-09 Exquisite Derrick Rose Auto Patch /99 RCs
5. 43 1996-97 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant BGS 9.5 RCs
6. 139 2003-04 Topps Chrome Lebron James BGS 9.5 RCs

To be honest, aside from the Exquisite cases I think I would take any of these over the Dual Logoman. The simple fact is there can be many more cards like that one produced.

What would you take? Something from the list above or something else?
